Why Active Bodies Make Healthy Minds

At FIFTH Movement, our mantra is simple but powerful

“Active Bodies, Healthy Minds.”

It’s the driving force behind everything we do in schools across Greater Manchester.

The Link Between Movement & Mind

Physical activity isn’t just about fitness. For children, it plays a vital role in brain development, emotional regulation, and their overall wellbeing. With increasing academic pressures, time for movement is often cut, ironically undermining the very outcomes schools are trying to achieve.

Movement Boosts Brainpower

A UK study of 86 primary pupils found that more active children performed significantly better in writing and maths compared to their less active peers.

Research consistently shows a positive link between physical activity and:

  • Cognitive function
  • Focus and attention
  • Working memory
  • Overall academic achievement

In a BBC backed study pupils showed improved brain function and learning following movement, while 100% of schools saw mood improvements.

Movement Fuels Emotional Resilience

When children move, they don’t just build physical skills, they release dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins, helping them:

  • Regulate emotions
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Improve self-esteem

This is especially important for children facing challenges outside the classroom. A physically active child is more emotionally balanced, better able to cope, and ready to learn.

What This Means for Your School

At FIFTH Movement, we don’t just deliver clubs, we create an active culture across the whole school day through:

  • Curriculum-aligned PE delivery
  • Lunchtime clubs that boost focus and behaviour
  • CPD that empowers teachers to lead confidently
  • Targeted inclusion programmes for the least active

We are helping schools turn movement into measurable improvements in wellbeing and behaviour.

Let’s Build Healthy Habits for Life

The habits children build now shape their futures physically, emotionally, and academically. Investing in movement is investing in whole-child development.

So when we say “Active Bodies, Healthy Minds”, we mean it.
